Humidity controlled and conveniently located, Space Station’s storage units are a flexible solution for small business owners in need of extra space. We spoke to Lauren, owner of Luminosity Glitter, to find out why she chose to use a self-storage unit to support her business’s growth.

When did you start Luminosity Glitter?

I started Luminosity Glitter back in 2019 whilst working as a full-time flight attendant so it was pretty much a side hustle. I finally hung up my wings in November 2021 and have been sparkling full time ever since!

What made you want to start your own business?

I had been watching a documentary on microplastics in our oceans and as a carnival lover, it got me thinking about glitter. I’d never actually thought about what it was made from or what happens once it’s been used and discarded of. I started researching eco-friendly alternatives and found a manufacturer in the UK that produces a glitter that biodegrades in a matter of weeks. The rest is sparkly history!

What advice would you give someone wanting to start a side business?

Learn as much as you possibly can. Whether you’re watching YouTube videos, doing online courses or going to networking events; absorb as much as you can from people that have been on the journey you’re starting out on. You’re going to make mistakes along the way, some extremely difficult and expensive ones, but it’s all part of the growth process.

How would you describe your business?

I would describe my business as super sparkly, very pink and rapidly growing! Luminosity Glitter is an eco-glitter company, predominantly e-commerce based, and we run luxury eco glitter bars at events and festivals across the UK.

Why did you choose to run your business from a self-storage unit, rather than a traditional business/ office location?

London office rental prices are completely out of reach for a small business like mine, especially with the constant rising bills and co-working spaces becoming increasingly popular. A self-storage unit in Chiswick has been perfect for me and my business as I have access 7 days a week, meaning I can work around my busy schedule and drop by at a moment’s notice. It’s also a super cost-effective option.

What are your business plans/ goals for the future?

By the end of this year, I hope to invest in a larger or secondary unit, having already filled the one I have! However, my more long-term ambitions include owning my very own pink, glittery HQ and being able to offer my best friends that are not satisfied with their current employment situations a full-time job with me.

If you are able to supply, how much money did you use to start up your business?

I started the business with just £50. I used that money to buy around 50g of Bio glitter and some pots & Jiffy bags on eBay. Since then, I’ve purchased over 125 kilos of the sparkly stuff!

If you are able to supply, what was the turnover if your first year of trading from a self-storage unit?

I’ve had my unit for 7 months – with approximately £14,000 in turnover.

What was the one unexpected thing you’ve learned/discovered during your new venture?

I always knew running a business would involve ten times more than working a 9-5, but the true extent of it shocked me. Everybody always says make sure you take time for yourself, but in reality, it can often be hard to balance your work life and social life. Customers will want things or have complaints 365 days of the year, and so I’ve had to learn to set reasonable boundaries to my customers and allow some time for myself.
