Going green
We’re keen to do our bit for the environment here at Space Station, which is why we’ve established a green policy to reduce our impact as much as we can. If you think about it, self-storage itself is something of a green industry – it’s all about giving you the space to keep and reuse things rather than sending them to landfill.
We set ourselves the target of halving our carbon footprint within three years, and we’re well on our way to achieving that Carbon Footprint Standard certification. If you’re thinking about using our storage rooms for business purposes, then just think about what that could mean for your business’s carbon footprint too! Here’s how we’re doing it:
Wind Power
Renewable energy sources are absolutely essential to protecting our environment, and that’s why we’ve started exploring the potential of harvesting mighty winds to power our storage facilities. Our Brentford location is the first of our storage centres to get its own wind turbine – a 5.5 kilowatt beast that’s so far proving to be a fantastic trial run for our green energy ambitions.
Solar energy
Solar panels are one of the easiest ways to create green energy, and we’ve now installed them at five of our stores. They’re providing us with 200,000 kilowatt hours of totally green energy, which is reducing our CO2 output by over 120 tonnes a year. Thanks to the folks at Infinite Energy for their great job getting them installed – go and have a look yourself, and tell them we sent you!
Bright lights
There are thousands of lights across all of our locations, because having well-lit corridors and units is essential to making sure our stores are both safe and welcoming. We’ve been undertaking a mighty project to change all of them from environment-harming fluorescent lights to clean and efficient LEDs. It’s taken a while, and we are nearly there, but it’s worth it – and our facilities are even brighter.
Recyclable materials
We sell loads of packaging materials in our on-site shops, and plenty of our stock is made up of cardboard boxes. We sell thousands every year, and we’ve scoured the country for suppliers who only use 100% recycled cardboard. It’s the least we can do.
Responsible storage
At Space Station, our attitude is always “store it” rather than “throw it away” – you never know when something might come in handy further down the line, so putting things in storage rather than having a ruthless clear-out will save you the trouble of realising you’ve thrown away something brilliant and/or essential. The handy added bonus, of course, is that you’re diverting things away from landfills by storing them with us! And, with upcycling being so popular, there are so many tips available on how to reuse your furniture and unused goods.
