How to improve your home’s kerb appeal

9 ways to increase your home’s kerb appeal

1. Spruce up your entry point

Your front door is one of the big focal points to any home, and your buyer will lay eyes on it as soon as they arrive. Making sure your doorway feels fresh and clean is one of the quickest and easiest ways to make sure their first impression is a great one. Before greeting visitors, clean down your door using a damp cloth, and if it needs it, give it a quick lick of paint.

Next up, sweep down your front steps and cut back any straggling plants, so the path to your front door is clear. If the porch area houses wellies and other outdoor items that you don’t want lingering in your hallway, make sure these are tidy, and sweep any dirt away from your doorstep.

2. Tidy up your driveway

With constant use, driveways and patios can look a little tired – especially if it’s been raining heavily. A quarterly jet wash will help breathe some new life into your driveway. Before jet washing or hosing down, make sure to pull out any weeds surrounding the area, and sweep away any dirt and moss.

3: Think about adding some greenery

Weeds can be off-putting, but beautifully kept flowers are a completely different kettle of fish. Training plants to climb around your front door will make even the most inner-city house feel like a dreamy countryside cottage, and brightly coloured potted plants or window boxes add a pop of colour to the front of your house.

If you don’t fancy getting green-fingered, opt for low maintenance grasses that’ll add some interest to your front garden, without the hassle. Explore more gardening tips and tricks for every season.

4. Trim your lawn

Pulling up to a property that you have your heart set on and seeing a front lawn looking out of control can be a big turnoff. To stop your home from looking overgrown and unkempt, keep your lawn cut short and healthy, so that it’s looking its best for potential buyers.

5. Clean the windows

Mucky windows can be an instant turn off to potential buyers, so make sure these are kept on top of, especially before any house viewings. Keeping your windows free of dirt and grime will help to let more natural light in for a bright, welcoming feel. Don’t forget to also wipe down the window frames while cleaning the glass – both inside and out – to get rid of any lingering cobwebs or dirt.

6. Hide away bins

Your bins can make for a messy, cluttered look if they’re currently sat outside the front of your house. If you have the space, move them to a different location, and try and keep them neat and tidy, so you won’t draw attention from the front of the property. If your bin is broken or missing, make sure to contact your local council, who’ll help to replace it with a new one.

7. Tidy up the boundary lines

When you have potential buyers looking at your current property, it’ll be important that they can establish where the boundary lines start and end, so make sure that fences, gates and any sort of shrubbery are looking tidy and fresh. Wooden or metal fences and gates might benefit from a fresh coat of paint, as well as a quick check to make sure they’re functioning properly.

8. Be mindful of your vehicles

If you’re expecting people viewing your property, you want to welcome them in, so be mindful where you park your car. If you have a driveway, make sure you’re not blocking the main entry point, so your buyers can walk straight up to your front door easily. Similarly, if your car’s parked on the street, you want potential buyers to be able to see the front of your property in all its glory, so try not to block any gates or doors.

9. Clean any external walls

Check external brickwork for any cracks and weak points. A quick scrub with a soft brush can make a big difference, clearing any loose debris from the walls and giving your brickwork a fresh look.
