Our customer stories: Urbanfield Sports

We spoke to Luke and Tracy at Urbanfield Sports, a bespoke sportswear business based in West Yorkshire. Setting up shop in one of our flexible Wakefield storage units and an office space, Urbanfield have been part of the Space Station Wakefield community since January 2025. When did you start your business? 

Urbanfield Sports was started in July 2023.

How would you describe your business?

We provide high-performance sportswear and activewear for a variety of sports, including running, triathlon, gym & training, swimming, badminton, and outdoor activities. Our gear is designed to help you push your limits and to support your goals in every workout and competition.

What made you want to start your own business?  

We started out in badminton sportswear. At the time, there was no-one in the UK that could produce bespoke uniform or kits for badminton teams year round, and definitely none that didn’t have a minimum order requirement.

Why did you choose to run your business from a self-storage unit, rather than a traditional business or office location?  

We are closer to the City Centre here at Space Station Wakefield, and the unit being in the building means we don’t have to keep stock in the office. It’s not getting in the way when we are trying to work. The previous shop we had was more expensive, wasn’t alarmed with 24 hour security, and all in all, wasn’t fit for purpose.

What are your business goals for the future?  

Our aim is to be the main supplier for badminton individual kits and teamwear in the UK.

What advice would you give someone wanting to start a side business?

Plan. We had to find the right resources, suppliers and building. We needed the right office space and storage for what we were looking to do, and we needed machines, including PCs, a heatpress and more. We wanted to buy pieces of equipment that would last - or at the very least, pay for themselves. 

The best piece of advice I can give is to start small - you can’t run before you can walk!

Can you tell us how much money you used to start up your business?  

We are still starting up! We started in the garage at home. Our initial machines weren’t up to spec – we didn’t do enough research and just got the cheapest ones. 

What was the one unexpected thing you've learned/discovered during your new venture?    

Everything in the sportswear business is a learning curve that is evolving constantly.
