14 Renter-Friendly Hacks

Detached houses

Typically one of the more expensive types of properties on the market, detached homes often come with a fair bit of extra space, so it’s worth making the most of it where possible. Consider utilising attics or basements to store seasonal decorations, sports gear or bulky items. If you have a garden, garages and sheds can easily become organised hubs for tools and equipment, whilst inside, made-to-measure wardrobes, and bespoke storage units can keep everything tidy without sacrificing style.

Semi- detached houses

In semi-detached homes, space matters and so does privacy. Adding fitted cupboards or shelving along shared walls not only provides you with extra storage for your belongings, but can also help reduce noise by adding an extra layer of insulation. If you’ve got an attic, converting it into a storage zone, or even a usable room with built-in storage, can make a huge difference. Keep items close to where they’re used so things stay neat and easy to find.

Terraced houses

Terraced properties can often feel tight on space, so it’s all about maximising what you have available. Optimise vertical space with wall-mounted units and tall cupboards to free up your floor. Under-stair cupboards and alcoves are also perfect for hidden storage and great for shoes, coats or cleaning supplies. If you want to go one step further, you could even try vacuum sealing items to compress them for long-term storage; just make sure you don’t do this with any delicate items that may be damaged over time or by potential moisture build up.

Bungalows

One-level living is convenient, but storage can get tricky. If you are fortunate enough to have attic space, add a pull-down ladder and use it for seasonal items or things you don’t need every day. With no stairs to worry about, single-storey homes are also perfect for rollable storage. Trolleys, wheelable baskets or mobile shelving can glide from room to room with ease. Outside, a sturdy garden shed can keep tools, bikes and outdoor kit out of sight and your home feeling calm and clutter-free.

Flats

If you currently live in a flat, opt for modular storage such as thin console tables and corner units to ensure you are making the most of narrow spaces. Multi-purpose furniture pieces, such as storage ottomans and benches, will also be lifesavers when space is at a premium. Furthermore, consider open shelving to create an added layer of functionality without overwhelming the space, and fill empty shelves with ornaments for a touch of style and personality.

Cottages

When it comes to implementing storage within your cottage, the biggest consideration will likely be navigating those trickier built-in features. Whilst traditional elements such as exposed wooden beams and low ceilings are all part of the charm in this type of property, it goes without saying that they can make furnishing your home quite difficult. A great way to work around these is with custom-built shelving, which ensures that every inch of space is optimised to its full potential. Wicker baskets and vintage trunks are also great options, as they blend with the aesthetic of the cottage.

Maisonette

Maisonettes give you two levels to play with, so treat each one like its own zone. Keep things where you use them (kitchenware downstairs, cleaning products upstairs, for example) to avoid running back and forth. Staircases are an overlooked goldmine for storage; simply add shelves, drawers or hidden cupboards underneath to use that space to its full effect.

With these tips and hacks, you can maximise the space around your rented property. Learn how to make the most of those awkward spots with our expert guide and create even more space for your belongings.
