Our best small bathroom storage ideas

First things first: it’s time to declutter. When it comes to small bathroom storage, our resident storage expert Vlatka Lake says, ‘Before you buy anything new, have a proper sort-out first. You’d be surprised how much space opens up once you’ve thrown out any empties and taken out anything that doesn’t need to live in the bathroom.’

Tip 1. Hang shelves in the window

If you don’t have the spare wall space in your bathroom, you can add some shelves into your window frame for your daily essentials. We’d recommend keeping your skincare and makeup off this shelf, as the direct sunlight can cause them to deteriorate. Instead, try storing make up brushes, hair accessories or shaving equipment for easy access.

Tip 2. Opt for corner storage

Corner shelves or corner cabinets make brilliant use of the space that usually sits empty. Now you’ve got extra storage and no more dead space collecting dust!

Tip 3. Maximise the space over the toilet

The wall above your toilet is an underused spot and perfect for tiny bathrooms where you’re tight on space. Just add a shelf, a cabinet or an over-toilet unit for handy storage for your towels, spare loo rolls and other bathroom bits.

Tip 4. Mounted tumblers or holders for toothbrushes

To keep your sink clutter-free and avoid those annoying toothpaste marks, try mounting some tumblers on the wall for your toothbrushes. For a renter-friendly version, toothbrush holders that use suction work perfectly.

Tip 5. Go for around-sink shelves

Shelving or cupboards that wrap around the sink neatly slot in and add handy storage. If you go for the cupboard option, this is also a great place to hide away any of those unsightly cleaning products.

Tip 6. Add countertop shelves

If your countertop is always cluttered, you could also add a raised shelf or a small, tiered unit. Now you’ve got a top and bottom level to work with, you’ll have loads more surface space for the bathroom bits you reach for the most.

Tip 7. Repurpose a bar cart

A bar cart is a surprisingly handy bathroom addition. The shelves are perfect for storage, the wheels are great for moving it out of the way when it’s not needed, and you can even display some skincare or add a little plant to the top.

Tip 8. Invest in a mirrored wall cabinet

A mirror vanity above the sink is the best of both worlds for a tiny bathroom, giving you hidden storage and a bathroom mirror all in one. It’s also ideal for stashing away your skincare, like retinols and vitamin C products, which need to be kept out of direct sunlight.

Tip 9. Try a pull-out narrow cabinet

Slim pull-out storage cabinets can slot into the gaps that are too narrow for a normal caddy or trolley, like those tricky gaps between the sink and bath. You can really pack a lot into these pull-out cabinets despite their deceptively small size.

Tip 10. Add a bookshelf to the bathroom

A freestanding bookshelf looks great in a bathroom and adds so much more storage. It’s also a great budget-friendly and renter-friendly idea. If you want to be super-tidy, you can even add storage baskets or tubs to organise it even more.

Tip 11. Make the most of awkward existing nooks

If you’re in an older house or a converted bathroom that has awkward alcoves, like an old medicine cabinet recess, you can actually turn these into some open shelving for your small essentials. This way, you’ll make the most of your space without adding too much extra clutter.

Tip 12. Hang a shelf above the door

A tiered shelf over the bathroom door is perfect for towel storage, keeping them up and out of the way. As a bonus, it also makes your bathroom feel like a posh hotel.

Tip 13. Add some hooks

Hooks are one of the simplest ways to keep your bathroom tidy and organised without having to spend a lot on space-saving units. You can use them for towels, bathrobes or even for hanging baskets to hold things like hair tools. If you’re in a rented place and can’t drill, adhesive hooks are surprisingly strong and come off cleanly.

Tip 14. Choose in-shower storage

A corner shower caddy or hanging shelf keeps all of your bottles off the shower floor and out of the way, making for a much more relaxing shower.

Tip 15. Categorise your bathroom cupboard

Make the most of the storage you already have by categorising, labelling and organising everything in your bathroom cupboard. Use larger baskets for spare towels or toilet paper, and clear tubs for toiletries that can be easily pulled out.

Tip 16. Use drawer organisers

Bathroom drawers can become a bit of a dumping ground quite quickly. Some simple drawer dividers add order instantly, so your makeup, skincare or hair accessories  all have their own place.

Tip 17. Add a slim loo-roll caddy

Hide away your tower of spare loo roll in a slim caddy or trolley that can slot between the toilet and the wall, keeping them to hand whilst still tucking them out of the way.

Tip 18. Swap to a collapsible laundry basket

A collapsible laundry basket that can fold flat when it’s not in use frees up a lot of valuable space in a small bathroom.

Tip 19. Hide essentials in wicker baskets

Wicker baskets are the perfect bathroom addition; not only do they make great decoration, but they’re also ideal for hiding everything you need to grab but don’t want on show.

Tip 20. Add some built-in bathroom shelves

If you want to invest a bit more in your bathroom to make the space work for you, you could try some custom built-in shelves. This way, you can add some storage exactly where it makes the most sense with your specific bathroom layout.

Tip 21. Try a towel rail or ladder

A mounted towel rail can keep your towels off the floor and dry them at the same time. If you don’t want to go the wall-mounted route, a freestanding towel ladder works brilliantly and looks chic, too.

Tip 22. Bring in a narrow trolley

A trolley with wheels is another great option for a small bathroom, as you can move it around where you need. Make sure you pick one that’s suitable for a bathroom though, you don’t want it getting rusty and ruining your towels.

FAQs

Bathrooms can get pretty warm and humid, so avoid storing these items in there to save them from getting damaged:

  • Medications and vitamins
  • Non-waterproof electronics
  • Retinol, peptide, and vitamin C skincare
  • Perfume
  • Powder makeup products
  • Nail polish
  • Jewellery
  • Books and magazines
  • Spare unused razors

You don’t want to fill your small bathroom too much, but if you want to make the most of the dead space, you could add some artwork, extra shelves or even some corner storage.

There are a few little tricks that can make your small bathroom look bigger. Having narrow units slotted into gaps and baskets that hide away clutter make it feel emptier, and like you have more space than you actually do. A bathroom mirror or vanity will also make your bathroom look bigger than it is.
